If you're on console, just connect a second controller, press any button on it at the character select screen, and bam, you've got a partner in crime to fight off those zombies. For PC, you'll need two input devices (like a keyboard and controller) and to press start on the controller or a specific key on the second keyboard when at the character select menu. I'd say stick to solo. Co-op messes with the real PvZ vibe.
