You can't play PS5 games directly from an external hard drive. You can only store them there. You have to transfer them back to the internal SSD to play.

I know it's a bit annoying, but PS5 games need the speed of the internal SSD to run properly. External drives are just for storage.

Unfortunately, PS5 games must run from the internal SSD or a specially compatible NVMe SSD. External hard drives can only store them for you.
