tbh just dig. You'll find cool stuff the more you dig. And when in doubt, keep digging. Monsters? Dig around 'em. Lava in the way? Dig a detour. Terraria's all about those tunnels and finding treasure in the dark, weird places.
Don't underestimate the power of the guide NPC. Saved me more times than I can count when I started out. Always check in with him if you're stuck or need to know how to make something.
