Trust me, just go to your Friends list, hit the pencil icon for 'Edit Privacy,' and change it to 'Only Me.' It works every time!
From your Facebook profile, tap 'Friends' > the three-dot menu icon > 'Edit Privacy' > then choose 'Only Me' to hide your friends list. Easy peasy.
