From my experience, open the build mode, go to 'Decorate,' select the item, and then position it on the cabinets. Done!
Easy peasy! Enter build mode, go to the inventory tab, select the item you want, and then place it where you want on the cabinets!
You really don't need to make this hard. Enter build mode, pick your item, and plop it down on the cabinet. Voil脿!
