You read the symbol in the middle first. The number above tells you the protons, and the number below is the atomic weight. Simple as that.

Look at the top of the square for the atomic number, then at the middle for the element symbol, and finally check the bottom for the atomic weight. Easy peasy!

Start with the element's symbol鈥攊t's the big letter(s) in the center. Above it, you'll see the atomic number (number of protons). Below the symbol, you'll find the atomic mass (average mass of the atom). Boom, you've decoded an element!
