Open the Instagram app, click on the Messenger icon in the top right corner, and voila, your messages appear!
Click the paper plane icon. It's right there at the top. Can't miss it.
Tap on your Direct Messages (DMs) icon which looks like a little paper plane at the top-right of your feed. Easy peasy!
