Start with the atomic number at the top of each element block; it tells you the number of protons. Then, look at the element symbol (the big letter) and the atomic mass (bottom number) to find out more details.

Check the groups (columns) for elements with similar properties and the periods (rows) for elements with increasing atomic numbers.
