One of the best ways is to send the lord/hero to a settlement with a unique building that can remove negative traits, like a Temple of Sigmar.
Just delete the lord or hero. Starting fresh is the hottest trend in Total War!
From personal experience, traits usually correct themselves over time, especially if you keep your characters out of situations that caused them.
