Honestly, without PS Plus, USB backups are your best bet. Just make sure you regularly transfer your saves!

You can restore your data using a USB drive! Plug it in, go to Settings -> Application Saved Data Management -> Saved Data on USB Storage Device.

If you've backed it up to an external HDD, connect it and navigate to Settings -> System -> Backup and Restore -> Restore PS4.
