In battle, hit the "Retreat" button at the bottom of the screen (looks like a white flag) to pull your units away from the fight. Just make sure they aren’t surrounded first!

I usually just use the retreat button in battle if things go south. It’s the white flag icon on the bottom right.
To retreat, select your army on the campaign map, and then right-click on a tile away from any enemies. Your army will attempt to move to that destination and avoid combat!
Honestly, just hit the retreat button on the campaign map - your army will flee as long as they have movement points!
