From my own experience, I found that third-party apps can sometimes recover messages, but be careful and read reviews first! Many of them promise a lot but deliver little.
If you don't have a Google Drive backup, don't panic! Check your phone's local backups. Use a file manager to navigate to WhatsApp > Databases and rename the most recent backup file by removing the date. Then, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp and restore from the renamed local backup.
