Found myself in the same boat once! Simply uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, follow the prompts to restore from Google Drive or iCloud, and voila, old messages back!
If you have an older copy of the WhatsApp backup file on your phone, you can restore that manually by placing it in the appropriate local storage folder. Might take a bit of tech-savvy though!
No backup? You're out of luck. Keep backups regularly, folks!
