You can't really scan Hot Wheels ID without the scanner. It's designed to work with it for a reason. Just get the scanner.
I don't even bother with a scanner. Just use my phone's camera and a QR code reader app. Works every time. Plus, you get to feel a bit like a tech wizard doing it this way.
