In the chat, look for 'online' below their name. If it's not there, they ain't online. Simple.
Just open WhatsApp, go to your chat with the person, and look at the top under their name. If they're online, it'll say 'online' right there!
Check the chat window with that person. If you see 'online' under their name, they're online. Otherwise, nope!
From my experience, opening the chat will tell you if they're online if you see 'online' right under their name at the top!
