Just head to the ship customization screen. It shows unused modules in a separate list. Easy peasy!

Just go to ship builder menu, and there you'll see a list of unattached modules. They're hard to miss!

Hop into the ship builder, it's in the ship menu. Unattached modules will show up in the parts list, usually highlighted because they're unused.
