To send a friend request in Splatoon 2, you gotta exit the game and use your Nintendo Switch's home menu. Go to your profile, find "Add Friend," enter your friend's friend code, and bada bing bada boom, you're friends!

Sending a friend request in Splatoon 2? Do it outside the game using the Nintendo Switch profile settings, not inside the Inkopolis!
Make sure you're adding friends through the Switch's "Add Friend" feature, not by squirting more ink on 'em!
I've done it a bunch鈥攋ust use the Switch home menu, hit profile, then "Add Friend," and pop in that friend code. Easy peasy!
