From personal experience, you have to manage your heroes a bit! Click on the general’s portrait, transfer units to the desired general, and voila – you’ve got separated forces ready to conquer!

Pro tip: select the army, use the 'split army' button, and micromanage those units like a boss!

To separate armies in Total War: Three Kingdoms, just select the army, click on the general's portrait, and choose 'Disband'. Then, move units to another general or army.
