Alright, first off, plug your HOTAS into the PS4. Then, fire up War Thunder and head to the controls menu. You'll find an option to select 'Joystick' - pick that bad boy and start customizing your controls!
From personal experience, after connecting your HOTAS, go to 'Options' > 'Controls' > 'Joystick'. Set up the axis and buttons as you like. It's a bit tedious but worth it.
Honestly, you don't need a HOTAS. A regular PS4 controller works perfectly fine and keeps things simpler.
