I've played a ton, and the shovel is a game-changer. Look for it in the deeper caves, then dig at any soft ground spots.
You gotta find the shovel first! Look in caves or abandoned camps; once you've got it, just equip and dig wherever you see loose soil or sand.
First, you need to locate the shovel, usually in one of the caves or near the crash site. Equip it from your inventory and use it to dig at soft ground spots by pressing the action button.
