Honestly, who cares about FPS when there are giant, terrifying sea creatures to worry about?
Press F3 to open the debug menu, then press F8 to activate the mouse cursor and uncheck the 'Disable Console' option. After that, press F3 again to close the menu. Now just press Enter and type 'fps' to show your FPS.
