If you're in a rush, just hit Settings & Privacy, then Settings, and under 'Your Facebook Information,' pick Deactivation and Deletion. Boom, done.
From first-hand experience, I found it's best to download a copy of your data first. Then, head to Settings & Privacy > Settings, and under 'Your Facebook Information', click 'Deactivation and Deletion'. Finally, select 'Delete Account' and follow the prompts!
Why would you want to shut it down? Just deactivate instead, keep your data safe!
