Honestly, collecting enough Acid is the real challenge in smelting. Once you've got that, the rest is pretty much clicking a few buttons at the Chemistry Station. I remember this one time I was so focused on gathering ores that I totally forgot about Acid. Ended up with a mountain of ore and nothing to do with it till I raided a Super Mutant camp for their supplies. Good times.
