Short and sweet: Not all statues spawn mobs. Hook up the right ones with wire and a switch or timer. Press or wait and mobs appear.
FYI, some statues spawn mobs that don't drop loot. So if you're looking for easy farming, make sure you're using the right statues. Learned that the hard way after setting up a massive farm. No loot, just lots of grief.
