In Splatoon 2, if you're looking to spectate a match, you'll need to be in a Private Battle. Before the match, the host can set up spectators by selecting the players who will be watching instead of participating. Spectators then get a unique bird's-eye view of the action without getting splattered!

Private Battles in Splatoon 2 let you spectate! Just have the match host assign you as a spectator, and you're good to go.
