You can disable auto-download. Go to Settings > Data and Storage Usage > Media Auto-Download, and uncheck photos for all the connections.
For iPhone users, head to WhatsApp settings > Chats > and turn off 'Save to Camera Roll.' Problem solved!
Why save when you can just view and move on? Simply disable 'Media visibility' in chat settings.
