Go to Settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download, and untick all the boxes. Voila! No more auto downloads.

Settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download, then select 'No Media' under each section.

You can stop auto download by going to Settings, selecting Storage and Data, and then disabling auto-download for all media types. Trust me, it saves both data and storage.
