Here's what worked for me: In WhatsApp, tap on Settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download. Then, uncheck all the options under Photos. It saves both storage and data on my phone.
Easy fix: Settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download. Deselect Photos. Done.
Go into WhatsApp settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download. Then just uncheck Photos for Wi-Fi and Mobile Data!
