Honestly, just don't go into caves. Stick to high ground, much safer and better loot.
Torches or lanterns are your best friends down there! Light up your surroundings to spot enemies before they spot you. Also, don't forget to keep an eye out for hidden treasures.
Whenever I play in caves, I make sure to have a solid escape route planned out. Building staircases up or having impulse grenades can get you out of a tight spot fast.
