Outside of battle, go to the main menu, select 'Characters', and then choose the character you want to control as the lead.

To switch characters in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, just press the left and right shoulder buttons (L and R) during battle. Easy peasy!

You don't even have to pause the game! Just press L or R in the heat of the moment to swap characters on the fly!
