I switched mine to Vulkan by adding -vulkan under the command line arguments in Settings. My frame rates got way better!
Honestly, the default rendering API works fine for most people. Only switch if you're having issues.
If you're looking to change the rendering API, you need to open the Epic Games Launcher, go to Settings, find Fortnite, and under Additional Command Line Arguments, type -d3d11 for DirectX 11, -d3d12 for DirectX 12, or -vulkan for Vulkan.
Just head to the Epic Games Launcher, Settings, scroll to Fortnite, and type -d3d11, -d3d12, or -vulkan under Additional Command Line Arguments.
