How to Sync PS3 Controller Without USB
It's tricky, but you can use Bluetooth. Turn on the PS3, go to Settings > Accessory Settings > Manage Bluetooth Devices. Select 'Register New Device' then hold the PS button and the Share button on the controller for a few seconds until it starts to sync.

Not possible without a USB cable, my friend. You need the cable to sync initially.
If you have another synced controller, you can use it to navigate to Settings > Accessory Settings > Manage Bluetooth Devices. Then add your new controller by holding the PS and Share buttons.
First-hand experience here! Borrow a friend's USB cable just once to sync it, then you're good to go wirelessly. Luckily, any mini-USB cable will do!
