Taming animals in Terraria isn't a thing like in some other games. What you can do is capture critters with a Bug Net and keep them as pets in terrariums or let them roam free in suitable biomes. For a more 'pet' experience, there are pet summoning items scattered throughout the game that let you summon a variety of creatures to follow you around. These range from dogs and cats to more exotic creatures, all obtained through different means like fishing, treasure hunting, and boss fights!

Actually, you can't 'tame' animals in Terraria. You catch 'em with a Bug Net or summon pets with special items. Simple as that.
