First, mark the area around the wall and make sure it's safe to start. Use a sledgehammer or other demo tools to break down the wall piece by piece. Stack the debris out of the way, then start by setting a new foundation before building the wall back up with your desired materials. Make sure to properly compact the ground and use landscaping fabric before adding gravel and the new wall blocks for stability.

Just hire a contractor. They get it right the first time, and you get to keep your weekends.

When my grandpa and I took down our old retaining wall, we found it easiest to use a jackhammer. Once the wall was down, we put in a new drainage system before laying the first row of blocks. Don鈥檛 forget to tamp down the base real good!
