How to Tell If Pokemon Cards Are First Generation

To spot a first-generation Pokemon card, check the bottom right corner of the card for its edition. First gen cards often have a 1 inside a black circle or lack the symbol entirely, indicating they're from the original release. Also, look for the absence of a foil layer on the card front; most early cards didn't have this. The card's artwork can be another giveaway. First-generation cards feature classic, less digitally-enhanced art. Finally, the expansion symbol, which can be found on the right side of the card just below the picture, will tell you from which set it comes. If there's no symbol there, it's likely from the very first base set released in 1996.

Actually, not all first-gen cards are without the foil layer. Some of the rare cards from the first sets, like Base Set Charizard, did have a holo effect. So, it's more about the lack of an expansion symbol and checking the edition mark.

Nah, just look for the really dated art style. If it looks old and nostalgic, you probably got a first-gen!
