Check mutual friends' follower lists. If they're missing from there, they probably deactivated. Happens to the best of us!
I had a buddy disappear off Instagram; turns out he deactivated. His DMs were still there, just no profile.
If you visit their profile link and it says 'User not found,' they probably deactivated their account. Simple as that!
