You can't trade in Pokemon GO without being close. You both need to be within 100 meters of each other to trade.

Sadly, you need to be within 100 meters of your buddy to trade in Pokemon GO. No long-distance trading for now!

No way around it—Niantic designed Pokemon GO so you have to be physically close (within 100 meters) to trade. Maybe future updates might change things, who knows!
