I've tried every trick in the book. Unfortunately, you’ve gotta be physically close to trade in Pokemon GO.
Long-distance trading in Pokemon GO isn't straightforward. You need to be within 100 meters of each other to trade Pokemon. So, maybe plan a meet-up or go on a virtual road trip with your buddy!
No remote trading in Pokemon GO yet; you need to be close by. Hoping for an update that changes this soon!
