You can also press the * button on your Roku remote while watching something, then navigate to 'Closed Captions' and toggle it off. Voil脿!
Experienced Roku user here! I've found that sometimes you might need to double-check individual app settings too, as some apps override the Roku settings.
Just go to the settings and turn it off. Easy peasy.
