Actually, there's also a way to manually scrap items if you want to see exactly what materials you're getting out of your junk. In build mode in your settlements, drop your junk items on the ground, then look at them and hit the 'Scrap' option. It's a bit more time-consuming, but hey, sometimes you just need that one specific material, right?

Super easy! Just head over to any workbench you find in the game, like the ones in your settlements. Drop all the junk you've collected into the workbench's inventory. Then, when you're crafting or building, the game automatically breaks the junk into the materials you need. Magic, isn't it? No manual breakdown needed; the game does it all for you!
