Go to 'Settings', then 'Sound', and finally 'Controller Speaker'. Just turn the volume all the way down!

Easiest way is through the PS menu: Settings > Sound > Controller Speaker. Slide that volume slider to zero.

Pro tip: Use the PS button to access quick settings. From there, adjust the controller sound down to off.

I just muted mine by holding the PS button, then navigating to Sound and Devices and turning off the controller speaker.
