From personal experience, I've found changing the rest mode settings in System > Power Saving to 'Don't Put in Rest Mode' keeps it from slipping into rest mode unexpectedly.

If you wanna skip the menus, simply hold the power button for about 7 seconds until you hear the second beep. That'll shut it down completely.
