You can also mute notifications by going to 'Notifications Settings' and customizing your preferences in 'Push Notifications'.
Just put your phone on silent, and problem solved! No more sounds from Facebook or anywhere else.
On the desktop? Mute the tab! Just right-click it and click 'Mute site.' Works like a charm.
