If you're in the middle of a game, make sure to save first! Then, just press and hold the power button on the console until it beeps twice.
To turn off the PS3, just press and hold the power button on the front of the console until it beeps twice. Alternatively, you can navigate to the XMB (cross media bar) and select 'Turn Off System' from the 'Users' menu.
Pro tip: Use the controller! Hold the PS button, then choose 'Turn Off System' from the menu. Game Over (in a good way)!
