You can mute the game by going to Settings after tapping the Pokeball. Turn off both Music and Sound Effects. Silence achieved!

Easy peasy! Just open Pokemon GO, tap the Pokeball to bring up the menu, go to Settings, and toggle off Music and Sound Effects.
