Just open your inventory and select the empty slot, usually represented by empty hands icon. Bam! Weapon unequipped.

Press 'G' on PC or the equivalent button on PS4 to holster your weapon. Easy peasy!

In Sons of the Forest, you just need to hold down the unequip button for a few seconds and voila, your weapon is holstered.
