To unequip weapons in Sons of the Forest, just press the inventory button (usually 'I') and select the weapon you want to unequip. Then, either drag it back into your inventory or select a different item to replace it in your hand.
Why unequip when you can dual-wield? Jk, swap to another item in your inventory to unequip the current weapon.
From personal experience, if you just want to put away a weapon, hit the inventory key and pick something like your lighter or a crafting material. Done!
