Don't sweat it too much; just enjoy the game! You'll naturally unlock characters by exploring and making choices. Completionists might have to play a few times, tho.
From my experience, the best way to unlock everyone is to be thorough with your exploration and dialogue choices. I got a different character on my second playthrough!
