If you get tired of waiting, use Classic Mode with different characters. Each run usually unlocks someone new.
Just play vs. matches! Every 10 minutes or so, a new challenger appears. Beat 'em to unlock 'em. Easy peasy!
Unlocking characters in Smash Ultimate: be a legend, beat World of Light, or show 'em who's boss in Classic Mode. Your call!
Spoiler alert: There's a way to force unlocks faster. Play a quick match, close the game, reopen it, and repeat. It's grindy but works!
