Try the old-school way: beat Classic or All-Star modes with various characters. It's pretty rewarding!
You can also unlock characters by playing a set number of Vs. matches. Just keep smashing!
For instant gratification, use the secret code. Just kidding, there isn't one. You're gonna have to work for it!
Playing a certain number of matches is the easiest way. For example, play 100 matches and unlock Marth.
